What is a partial hospitalization program (PHP)? Well, it’s an intensive outpatient treatment program that provides a structured and supportive environment for people who need more than traditional outpatient therapy but less than inpatient care. PHPs typically involve 6-8 hours of treatment per day, 3-5 days per week. Participants return home at night, which allows them to maintain some of their normal routine and responsibilities.

PHPs are designed to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder
  • Eating disorders
  • Substance use disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders

PHPs may also be used to provide support to people who are transitioning from inpatient care to outpatient care, or to prevent relapse in people who have a history of mental illness.

What to expect in a PHP

PHPs typically offer a variety of treatment services, including:

  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Medication management
  • Skills training
  • Educational workshops
  • Support groups

The specific services offered will vary depending on the program and the needs of the participants.

Benefits of a PHP

PHPs offer a number of benefits, including:

  • Intensive treatment: PHPs provide more intensive treatment than traditional outpatient therapy, which can be helpful for people who need more support.
  • Structured environment: PHPs offer a structured environment that can help people with mental illness to develop healthy routines and coping mechanisms.
  • Support from peers: PHPs provide participants with the opportunity to connect and support each other.
